2006 has once again witnessed complex and
volatile situation in the international military field. On the one hand,
the military security cooperation has been strengthened; on the other
hand, the non-proliferation mechanism and regional situation have been
confronted with new challenges. After careful analysis and comparison, the
editorial department of the PLA Daily, teaming up with some military
experts, has chosen the following top 10 major international military news
in 2006 (They are arranged in the order of occurring time.):
1. The Chinese troops actively participated in the joint
anti-terrorism military exercise.
2. Large-scale armed conflict broke out between Lebanon and Israel.
3. Navies of China and the U.S. staged joint search-and-rescue
exercise for the first time.
4. NATO took over Afghanistan's security affairs in an all-round way.
5. North Korea declared it conducted an underground nuclear test.
6. Russia began to use its Alamo-M mobile missile in field duty.
7. Japanese parliament adopted a bill to upgrade Defense Agency into
Defense Ministry.
8. President George W. Bush admitted for the first time that the U.S.
was not winning the Iraq War
9. The UN Security Council voted unanimously to pass a resolution
imposing sanctions against Iran because of Iranian nuclear issue.
10. Ethiopia falls into armed conflict with Somalia armed religious
sect.
