Chinese defense minister holds video talks with his Japanese counterpart

BEIJING, Dec. 14 -- Chinese State Councilor and Defense Minister General Wei Fenghe held video talks with Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi on Monday afternoon. 

Wei Fenghe first congratulated Mr. Nobuo Kishi on his appointment as Japanese Defense Minister. He said that China and Japan are two important regional countries and major world economies, sharing close location, similar culture and intermingling interests. Leaders of the two countries have reached an important consensus on developing China-Japan relations in line with the requirements of the new era, and both sides should strengthen exchanges and cooperation to promote the healthy and stable development of bilateral relations.

Wei added that in recent years, the defense relations between China and Japan have made continuous progress. It is necessary to maintain high-level exchanges, promote practical cooperation, strengthen multilateral coordination, accelerate the construction of air-sea liaison mechanism, and actively build constructive bilateral security relations. 

On the issues of the East China Sea and the Diaoyu Islands, Wei Fenghe pointed out that China is firmly determined to safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests. Both sides should focus on the overall and long-term situation, strengthen consultations and properly handle differences, so as to truly make the East China Sea a sea of peace, cooperation and friendship. Wei also expounded on China's principle and standpoint on the international and regional situations, the South China Sea, the Korean Peninsula and other issues.  

Nobuo Kishi said that Japan hopes to maintain stable relations with China, and maintaining defense exchanges with China is very important in the context of pandemic. Japan is willing to continue to maintain communication with China on issues of both sides’ concern, strengthen defense exchanges and cooperation, promote the construction of the air-sea liaison hot line, so as to jointly maintain regional peace and stability.
